History

In county Clare, sites of human habitation date back to the Stone Age. Many of these sites are still visible in the county - dolmens, wedge tombs, etc.

County Clare has also a number of castles dating from the 15th and 16th century, the medieval period.

The wars of the 17th century (against English) ravaged the county, leaving it ruined by famine and depopulation.

Then, after the Catholic Emancipation in 1829, County Clare fared badly during the Great Famine in the middle of the 19th century.
